The 9th Translation Forum for MA Students

On the afternoon of May 13th, the former deputy director of CIPG (China International Publishing Group) Huang Youyi delivered a speech entitled “Speak to the WorldChances and Challenges ” at the 9th Translation Forum for MA Students which was hosted by Professor Mo Aiping, the director of Center forTranslation Studies. The speech kicked off after a brief introduction about Mr.Huang and his theme.

   

In the beginning, Huang analyzed the role of China in the globalization era by presenting examples as negative words upon China employed by some major western presses and the enthusiasm among their country leaders for learning from Chinese counterparts. Then the speaker explained reasons why China attracted so much attention from western world. Subsequently, Mr. Huang interpreted how Chinese should perform to build up a positive image of China in international stage by illustrating dozens of first-hand cases in his translating career.

In the second part, Huang detailed strategies to construct international discourse. He mentioned that, in a globalized world, effective communications should target on audiences’ interest and provide information accordingly. Thus, suggestions upon translation can be as follows: 1) Taking historical andcultural differences into consideration; 2) Using readers-friendly expression;3) Simplifying complex Chinese resource text; 4) Reducing unnecessarydecorative words in reports; 5) Preferring easy background introductions to complicated ones.

He concluded the speech with his perception of translation“While translating, we are spreading culture.” He also said that a good translator demands a life-time learner. And he hoped that all the students can lay solid foundation for their future careers and have broader visions so as to make better contributions to strengthen China’s voice.
